When I was broke and in college I would make a giant pot of soup and invite my friends over for a cheap night of socialising. My friends would bring a bottle of wine, a baguette, some fancy cheese, maybe a case full of CDs and we'd have a fun and festive evening all of less than a night at the divey bar just off campus. There's no reason the tradition of a casual dinner party has to die just because we're all grown-ups with real jobs.
