The lake is named after the nearby South Holston Mountain, which rises over 4,000 feet and provides a scenic backdrop for the lake's clear blue waters.
South Holston Lake covers over 7,000 acres and has over 160 miles of shoreline. It was created in 1950 by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) by impounding the South Fork Holston River. The lake is a popular destination for boating, fishing, and other recreational activities. It is known for its excellent fishing, particularly for smallmouth bass and trout.
