It is a member of the Arowanas family and is native to the Fitzroy River system of central-eastern Queensland, Australia. It occurs in still waters and slow-flowing sections of streams. It is usually seen near the surface or near shore among aquatic vegetation. It is also territorial and aggressive towards other fishes. It feeds on insects, fishes, frogs and crayfish. It can reach a maximum length of 100 cm (39.4 inches).
