Libertad, fue el más activo y eficaz de todos los buques de la república durante el conflicto. Fue a su vez el buque insignia de la república durante casí todo el conflicto Al inicio de la guerra el Libertad se encontraba en el Ferrol, y junto al Acorazado Jaime I y el Crucero Miguel de Cervantes recibió órdenes de dirigirse a Cádiz bajo el mando de los sublevados. Los mandos aunque eran favorables a los sublevados estaban indecisos sobre la actitud a tomar. Durante la navegación las tripulaciones se amotinaron tomando el control de las tres naves, capturando a los Jefes y Oficiales. Ya claramente del lado de la República y obedeciendo las órdenes del gobierno la escuadra se concentro en Tánger para tratar de bloquear el estrecho.
