Also called Lincoln Minster, or the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln, and sometimes St Mary's Cathedral, it is one of the few English cathedrals built from the rock it is standing on. Construction began in 1072 and continued in several phases throughout the High Middle Ages. Like many of the mediaeval cathedrals of England it was built in the Early Gothic style. Erected sometime before 1250 by the counts of Ravensberg, the restored fortress has come to be the landmark of the city of Bielefeld in Germany's state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It is located on 180 metre (590 ft) Sparrenberg hill in the Teutoberg Forest.
