The beautiful daughter of a lonely, widowed Irish king, she died a martyr's death alongside her confessor St. Gerebernus and the court jester, at the hands of her insane father. Her shrine is in Gheel, Belgium, and has been noted for miraculous cures for centuries. The town has also been home for a sanatarium, noted, since the thirteenth century, for its enlightened and compassionate treatment of mental illnesses. St. Dymphna is also patron saint of nervous disorders, sleepwalking, and epilepsy.
