St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was the first American-born saint born to wealthy parents in New York City in 1774. She married and had five children before her husband died. After a trip to Italy, she famously converted to Catholicism and went on to found the Sisters of Charity of St. Joseph. She lived most of her life in Emmitsburg and is widely credited as the founder of the Catholic parochial school system. She was canonised in 1975.
