St. John Fisher (SAU 025) Plaque 2 5"x7"
Less well known by the general public than his contemporary and fellow martyr St. Thomas More with whom he shares a feast day, St. John Fisher (1469-1535) was, perhaps, the most renowned English theologian of his day. He was executed by Henry VIII for refusing to sanction the King's divorce of Catherine of Aragon and his taking the title "Supreme Head of the Church of England". + Image Credit (SAU 25): Antique image of St. John Fisher (after Hans Holbein the Younger) from a late 19th century chromolithographic devotional print probably drawn by Baron Jean-Baptiste Bethune (1821-1894) and published by the Socièté de St. Augustin, Bruges, Belgium, in the designer’s private collection of religious ephemera. + Feast: June 22
