St John the Baptist by Leonardo da Vinci's (1513-1516) Saint John the Baptist is a High Renaissance oil painting on walnut wood by Leonardo da Vinci. Likely to have been completed between 1513 and 1516, it is believed to be his final painting. John the Baptist was a Judaean preacher active in the area of the Jordan River in the early 1st century AD. He is also known as John the Forerunner in Christianity. St. John the Baptist was an ascetic Jewish prophet known in Christianity as the forerunner of Jesus.
