St. Luke, Evangelist 8" x 10" Print

This is new illustration created for St. Luke’s Youth Guild, a classical art history program based in St. Paul, Minnesota. The original had the name of the guild at the bottom but here, for general consumption, I have replaced it with the name of the saint. Aius here is a Latinisation of the Greek hagios (holy, saint), derived from the practice that one one occasionally sees in early Christian inscriptions of incorporating Greco-Latin mixed text. Aius itself appears in the Mozarabic form of the Sanctus. In this instance, it recalls St. Luke’s own roots, either as a converted Greek or a believer of Hellenised Jewish roots.
