St. Martin the Merciful was a 4th-century Roman soldier who became the Bishop of Tours. Known for his charity and compassion, he earned the name "the Merciful" after famously cutting his cloak in half to share with a freezing beggar. He later became a monk, founded monasteries and was known for his asceticism and his dedication to helping the poor, sick, and prisoners, even after being elected bishop.
