These Purple Sea Stars (Pisaster ochraceus) are enjoying the last of the evening sun in between waves on a rock in Ocean Shores, WA. Just because their name is purple, doesn't mean they don't come in orange, too. In this photograph, you can see one orange and one purple (minus an arm) sea star clinging to a large rock covered with brown and yellowish seaweed that fills half of the frame. It makes a diagonal from top left to lower right of the image. White, sunlit breakers form a crisp contrast all across the top of the image, and in the lower left, the dark, grey-green wave itself is in shadow.
