William Merritt Chase (November 1, 1849 – October 25, 1916) was an American painter, known as an advocate of Impressionism and as a teacher. He is responsible for establishing the Chase School, which later would become Parsons The New School for Design. Painting depicts young woman with back turned to the viewer, her lower body wrapped in an oriental fabric with asian influence decorative objects in the background.
