Sub tuum praesidium Print

This image combines one of the oldest known Marian prayers with a version of the icon of The Pokrova of the Mother of God. In English the prayer reads: “We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen.” Some scholars date a Coptic version of the prayer to as early as the 3rd century AD. The image depicts the protection of Mary in the form of her sheltering mantle, an idea especially loved by the Slavic people from at least the 12th century.
