This design features a painting by Briton Riviere (1840–1920), who was an English artist of Huguenot descent. The painting is titled "Sympathy" and it shows showing a little girl sent in disgrace to sit on the stairs while being comforted by her dog. It was one of his most popular works at the time. The first version was shown at the British Royal Academy in 1878.
