The Te Araroa Trail, meaning “The Long Pathway” in Māori, is New Zealand’s premier long-distance hiking route, stretching roughly 3,000 kilometres (1,900 miles) from Cape Reinga at the northern tip of the North Island to Bluff at the southern end of the South Island. Officially opened in 2011, the trail weaves through a stunning variety of landscapes—golden beaches, dense native forests, rugged mountains, alpine passes, farmland, and urban centres. It is not a continuous wilderness trek like some other famous trails; instead, it offers a blend of backcountry solitude and cultural immersion, with opportunities to pass through small towns and meet locals along the way.
