Ten-sasa facing sparrow watch
The sparrow design is often paired with bamboo, as sparrows live among bamboo groves and are closely associated with it. While it may have originated as a supplementary design to bamboo, ancient people saw the sparrow as more than just an accompaniment. They believed it to be a divine messenger that summoned gods to the bamboo, which served as a yorishiro (a vessel for the divine spirit). This is similar to the dove associated with Hachiman Shrines and the crow associated with Kumano Shrines. The sparrow is a bird that invites or summons the gods.
