The sparrow and bamboo are inseparable as sparrows live in bamboo forests. It is likely that the sparrow was added as an accompaniment to the bamboo. However, ancient people did not see this sparrow as a simple accompaniment. They considered it a divine messenger to summon the gods to the bamboo, which served as a yorishiro. It is the same as the dove of the Hachiman shrine or the crow of the Kumano shrine. It is a bird that summons or invites the gods. (From 'Kamon Hyakuwa (Upper)' by Danwa Motoji) Bamboo is not directly associated with such shrines, but it is a 'messenger' attached to the yorishiro. (same book, p.320) The name is based on 'Edo Monsho-shu'. 'Mon no Izumi' and 'Monsho Dai Shusei' refer to it as 'Sparrow facing bamboo in a circle'.
