Tesshu YAMAOKA (also known as Tetsufune or Yamaoka Tesshu) was a retainer of the Shogunate at the end of the Edo period, a politician in the Meiji period, and a thinker. He was also known as a master of sword, zen, and calligraphy. Tesshu was his go (pen name) and Ichirakusai. His common name was Tetsutaro. His imina (personal name) was Takayuki. He was the founder of Itto Shoden Muto-ryu (Muto-ryu). He was one of "Bakumatsu no Sanshu" . He was awarded the rank of Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank), and was given the title of viscount, Kunnito (Second Order of Merit).
