Is a warm water freshwater fish of the cichlid family. This is the only cichlid species that is native to the United States. The fish, also known as Rio Grande cichlid, originates from the lower Rio Grande drainage in Texas near Brownsville. It is also considered an invasive fish in non-native waters in the southern states. The Texas cichlid is also commonly found in the aquarium trade. These fish may grow to exceed 10 inches in length.
