While the exact origin of the "Thank You" message printed on the "t-shirt" plastic bag invented by Swedish engineer Sten Gustaf Thulin and patented by the company Celloplast in 1965 is difficult to pinpoint, it's clear that it was added by stores as a gesture of appreciation to customers. The simple message turned an ordinary bag into a way to build customer loyalty and enhance the shopping experience. The iconic design, including the repeated "Thank You" and other variations, has inspired designers to recreate them in reusable forms - specifically, the Library's graphic designer in this tote bag form.
