Below, the "Rosenwunder" (Miracle of the Roses) scene unfolds, where the tomb of Mary is opened and instead of a body, fragrant roses are found, a legend associated with her Assumption.
The composition is dynamic and multi-figured, with apostles and putti reacting to the miraculous event.
The youthful apostle shielding his eyes from the bright light is a motif Rubens developed in earlier sketches.
