The Black Watch at Quatre-Bras Postcard
The Battle of Quatre Bras took place on June 16, 1815, during the Napoleonic Wars, just two days before the pivotal Battle of Waterloo. It was a critical engagement between the French army under Marshal Michel Ney and the Anglo-Allied army led by the Duke of Wellington. Quatre Bras, a strategic crossroads in modern-day Belgium, held the key to controlling the movement of troops and supplies between the two main battlefields of Quatre Bras and Waterloo. The battle was fierce and chaotic, with both sides suffering significant casualties, but it ended inconclusively. Although the French initially gained control of Quatre Bras, the Anglo-Allied forces managed to hold their ground, setting the stage for the decisive Battle of Waterloo. Quatre Bras remains an essential chapter in the larger story of the Napoleonic Wars, as it contributed to the eventual defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte and his return to exile.
The Black Watch, also known as the Royal Regiment of Scotland, is one of the oldest and most storied regiments in the British Army. It was originally raised in the early 18th century as independent companies of Highlanders to help maintain order in the Scottish Highlands. In 1739, these companies were brought together to form a regiment, which would later become known as the Black Watch due to the dark colour of their government-issued tartan kilts. The regiment played a significant role in various conflicts, including the American Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. The Black Watch is particularly renowned for its bravery and discipline in battle, and its soldiers earned the nickname "The Ladies from Hell" from their enemies during the Peninsular War. Over the years, the regiment has served in many parts of the British Empire and continues to be an essential part of the modern British Army.
