In the dusty plains of the Texas Panhandle, just off the historic Route 66, a quirky tribute to automotive whimsy was born in 2002 when the Crutchfield family, inspired by the iconic Cadillac Ranch nearby, decided to create their own roadside spectacle. They buried five colourful Volkswagen Beetles nose-first into the ground at an old gas station in Conway, Texas, dubbing it the Slug Bug Ranch—a playful nod to the "punch buggy" game and a magnet for travelers seeking offbeat adventures. Over the years, visitors flocked to the site, armed with spray cans, transforming the bugs into a vibrant canvas of graffiti, much like their Cadillac counterpart.
