Any engineer could tell you that a product's design should include what we like to call 'overage'. That means that whatever the thing needs to do, you make sure it can do it better than is necessary. You should be glad, for example, that bridges are designed that way. But when it comes to this glass... well, a careful analysis shows that it contains just 50% of its capacity. That's a lot of overage, which contributes to a lot of excess material, excess mass, and (not to put too fine point on it) excess. So on careful review, our verdict is that this glass is twice as big as it needs to be. Just one of four carefully crafted answers to that eternal question: Is the glass half empty, or is it half full?
