Elias meets him beside the old signpost, where the two exchange a final handshake before the traveller proceeds into the mist. The scene is significant precisely because no supernatural intervention is required. The road does not rearrange itself. The lantern does not flare. The station does not return. The traveller simply leaves. The watercolor therefore treats departure as an ordinary human act restored to its proper scale. The road, previously associated with loss and repetition, is permitted once again to function as passage. The traveller may continue forward without denying where he has been, while Elias remains within a village he increasingly recognises as his own.
