The Hoogeland, Beekbergen (1896) by Jan Toorop ceramic tile. Het Hoogeland was originally built as a private residence which in 1892 became an institution to care for homeless people hence the poor unfortunates at the feet of the benevolent angel in the painting. Jan Toorop was a Dutch-Indonesian painter who lived in Indonesia until the age of 9 when he moved to the Netherlands - his parents did not follow and he never saw them again, although they did support him financially and he maintained a good, albeit long-distance relationship with them. Although his work is little known outside of the Netherlands he was regarded along with Van Gogh and Piet Mondrian as one of the most important and influential Dutch painters of his era. Toorop worked in various styles including Realism, Impressionism, Neo-Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Pointillism, Vintage, Art Deco and Art Nouveau. The artist remained fond of the Javanese motifs he had seen during his childhood and the flowing lines of this painting ref;ects that on this decorative ceramic tile, which makes for an attractive home accent or housewarming gift.
