Yet when Mrs. Bellamy approaches the watch, something inside her recognises it. A touch of the chain awakens impressions of a rain-soaked railway platform, a distant farewell, someone waving, and the overwhelming feeling that one person waited for another for a very long time. Elias has already experienced nearly the same mysterious fragments, suggesting that the memory belongs neither to him nor to Mrs. Bellamy, but somehow remains with the object itself.
