The Rebel ~ Irish Rebellion 1798 ~Irish Songs 1900 Poster

Andrew Mack's New Play: "The Rebel" is produced at the Academy of Music before a large audience. Andrew Mack appeared at the Academy of Music last night in his new play, "The Rebel," the scenes of which are based upon the Irish rebellion of 1798. Jack Blake, the hero, is a leader among the rebels. His lady love is Nora, daughter of 'Squire Bagenall. Capt. Armstrong, an English spy, has ingratiated himself with Jack's band and wears the green, but he is discovered by Nora's brother Ned. The Ned and Armstrong fight a duel, in which the former is killed. Meanwhile Jack has paid his court to Nora. In the midst of fights with the redcoats he snatches enough time to wed her, but is then captured and incarcerated in a British dungeon. After being condemned to death he makes a sensational escape, kills Armstrong in a sword fight an takes Nora off to France, bidding Ireland an eternal farewell. A large audience greeted Mr. Mack and applauded him all the way through, especially after his Irish songs. Of these there were four, part of them adapted to the warlike parts of the play and the rest coming during the love scenes. 1900
