“A Dorian war will come and a plague with it.” One of the most famous parts of Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War is his account of the plague that killed nearly a third of the Athenian population in 430 BCE. Thucydides himself contracted the disease and survived. The plague furthermore broke down Athenian society, and moral corruption ran rampant. Sparta would defeat Athens in the Peloponnesian War.
