EADWEARD MUYBRIDGE: Expatriate Englishman Eadweard Muybridge (1830–1904) was a brilliant and eccentric photographer. He gained worldwide fame photographing animal and human movement imperceptible to the human eye. His photography of moving animals captured movement in a way that had never been done before. His work was used by both scientists and artists. He developed a miraculous process for capturing movement on film, laying the ground work for the motion picture industry. Muybridge used photography to prove that there was a moment in a horse’s gallop when all four hooves were off the ground at once. He spent much of his later career at the University of Pennsylvania, producing thousands of images that capture progressive movements within fractions of a second. He also helped establish the legal concept of the crime of passion in the state of California’s laws, when he was acquitted of murdering his wife’s lover, Major Harry Larkyns, in 1874.
