The Zernike polynomials are the unique set of polynomials with rotational symmetries orthogonal over the unit disc. The are used extensively in optics and aberration theory to characterise and quantify imperfections in systems. Most notably, they are used in Lasik surgery to convert measurements of the human eye into ablation commands for the laser. These polynomials are hypnotic and represent some of the most beautiful art in mathematics. This tie makes a distinctive gift for a friend or a perfect gift for yourself.
