The Automat opened in Times Square in 1912 and featured meals prepared behind a wall of glass window cubes. Insert a nickel, open the glass and remove the dish. As an entree was purchased, fresh product was immediately refilled into the empty slot. The famous painting Automat by Edward Hopper portrays a lone woman sitting in an Automat drinking a cup of coffee.
