At the Rouge (1892–95) captures the electric nightlife of Belle Époque Paris. Toulouse-Lautrec portrays cabaret regulars including Jane Avril at the central table and La Goulue arranging her hair in the background, while inserting himself into the scene as the diminutive figure beside his taller cousin. Bold cropping, striking colour, and the eerie green-lit face at the right give this oil painting an immediate, modern quality.
