Tribute to the Swan Postcard
"Tribute to the Swan," was created by artist Ian G. Brennan to pay homage to the swans that are an iconic part of Lakeland's identity. In the 1950s Lakeland's native swan population was dwindling so a Lakeland resident wrote a letter to Queen Elizabeth II, explaining the situation and requested assistance. In response to the letter, Queen Elizabeth II graciously donated a pair of royal mute swans from her personal flock in 1957. The swans were captured and transported from England to Lakeland. The swans thrived in their new environment, and their descendants continue to inhabit the city's lakes today.
