For example, each spring in Ottawa, the Tulip Festival is a reminder of the connection of the Netherlands and Canada. During the Second World War, the Dutch Royal Family sought refuge in Ottawa. Canadian troops also were instrumental in the liberation of the Netherlands. To show their appreciation for Canada's help, in 1945 the Dutch Royal Family sent 100,000 tulip bulbs to Ottawa. More bulbs would follow as the years passed. 2619 Canadian soldiers, who died in the liberation of the Netherlands, are buried there.
