UNESCO WHS Serie - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - Kilauea - The Hawaii Volcanoes National Park contains two of the most active volcanoes in the world, Mauna Loa 13'679 ft (4'169 m) high and Kīlauea 4'091 ft (1'250 m) high, both of which tower over the Pacific Ocean. Volcanic eruptions have created a constantly changing landscape, and the lava flows reveal surprising geological formations. Rare birds and endemic species can be found there, as well as forests of giant ferns. Kīlauea is a shield volcano and one of the world's most active volcanoes. Located along the southeastern shore of the island, the volcano is between 210'000 and 280'000 years old and emerged above sea level about 100'000 years ago. Its name means «spewing» or «much spreading» in the Hawaiian language, referring to its frequent outpouring of lava.
