UNESCO WHS Serie - Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range - 紀伊山地の霊場と参詣道 - Set in the dense forests of the Kii Mountains, 3 sacred sites linked by pilgrimage routes to the ancient capital cities of Nara and Kyoto, reflect the fusion of Shinto and Buddhism. The sites and their surrounding forest landscape reflect a persistent and extraordinarily well-documented tradition of sacred mountains over 1‘200 years. Each of the three sites contains shrines, some of which were founded as early as the 9th century. Yoshino Mountain (Yoshino-yama) was the subject of a waka poem in the 10th century poetry compilation Kokin Wakashū. Several important religious and pilgrimage destinations are located around Mount Yoshino.
