UNESCO WHS - Amphitheatre of Mérida Postcard

UNESCO WHS Serie - World Heritage Sites in Spain Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida / Conjunto arqueológico de Mérida - The colony of Augusta Emerita, which became present-day Mérida, was founded in 25 BC at the end of the Spanish Campaign and was the capital of Lusitania. The well-preserved remains of the old city include, in particular, a large bridge over the Guadiana, an amphitheatre, a theatre, a vast circus and an exceptional water-supply system. It is an excellent example of a provincial Roman capital during the empire and in the years afterwards. The Roman Theatre of Mérida was constructed in the years 16 to 15 BC. It is one of the most famous and visited landmarks in Spain. The theatre has undergone several renovations, notably at the end of the 1st century or early 2nd century. The Amphitheatre of Mérida as inaugurated in the year 8 BC. It has an elliptical shape, and a major axis of 126 metres (413 ft) and one less than 102 metres (335 ft). This building was intended for gladiatorial fights and combats between beasts or men and beasts. The House of the Amphitheatre is a large complex from the end of the 3rd century BC. Part of it was built around a porticoed, trapezoidal courtyard with a garden in the centre where you can also find a well and a fountain. One of the rooms that come out onto this courtyard, possibly a dining room or triclinium, has got a mosaic floor. Such a huge range of different frogs available, which made my choices very difficult and now the reason I have a whole draw full of cards and postcards! Much better quality than you can buy in the shops and they are exactly on the subject I love and adore too.
