Vincent Van Gogh Flowering Plum Tree After Hiroshige Japonaiserie Fine Art Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His output includes portraits, self portraits, landscapes and still lifes of cypresses, trees in bloom, wheat fields and sunflowers. He altered their colours and added borders filled with calligraphic characters he borrowed from other prints. The works of Japanese print makers, Hiroshige and Hokusai greatly influenced Van Gogh, both for the beautiful subject matter and the style of flat patterns of colours, without shadow. Van Gogh collected hundreds of Japanese prints and likened the works of the great Japanese artists, like Hiroshige, to those of Rembrandt, Hals, and Vermeer.
