The iris garden is swirling with colour and emotion, as the purple irises flow up from their blue green stems and leaves. There are some orange flowers in the background, in back of the purple irises. Greens, blues, purples, and oranges are vibrant in Van Gogh's masterpiece. Vincent van Gogh pained Irises in 1889. He painted the flowers in Southern France, during his first month in Saint-Rémy. He was encouraged to paint during his stay, and Van Gogh painted the iris gardens that were on the hospital grounds. He wrote to his brother Theo, "When you receive the canvases I have done in the garden, you will see I am not too melancholy here.
