Van Gogh - Self Portrait with Bandaged Ear & Pipe Beach Towel

Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear and Pipe, painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles. Van Gogh shows himself in winter clothing with his bandaged ear and a pipe, using a tightly framed format and strong contrasts of colour. Painted in January, the portrait belongs to the small group he made after returning to work in Arles following hospitalisation. Rather than presenting a formal image of the artist, it records a specific moment of recovery through direct brushwork and an unembellished, closely observed face.
