After Van Gogh's release from Saint-Remy mental asylum, he returned to Paris and began seeing physician Dr. Paul Gachet, who had previously treated several artists and was an amateur artist himself. Van Gogh painted this portrait soon after and wrote to his brother that his impression of Gachet was that he was"...sicker than I am, I think, or shall we say just as much."
