Portrait of Joseph Roulin / Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin (Joseph-Étienne Roulin, le postier), painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Arles. Van Gogh returned repeatedly to Joseph Roulin's broad face, heavy beard and postal uniform, finding in his friend an ideal subject for his experiments in portraiture. This 1889 version belongs to the group he developed after months of close contact with the Roulin family in Arles. Strong outlines and non-naturalistic colour give the sitter a solidity that contrasts with the animated painted surface around him.
