Self-Portrait with Palette, painted in 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Holding a palette and brushes, Van Gogh presents himself explicitly as a working painter rather than simply as a sitter. Long blue and violet strokes sweep around his head and clothing, while orange hair and beard provide a strong complementary contrast. Made at Saint-Rémy, this was one of his final self-portraits and turns the traditional artist-with-palette format into an intensely personal study of colour and brushwork.
