Vincent van Gogh - Self-portrait with Straw Hat

Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat (Autoportrait au chapeau de paille), painted in 1887 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Paris. Van Gogh painted more than twenty self-portraits during his Paris years, using himself as a readily available model while he developed his skills in figure painting. This work shows his growing awareness of Neo-Impressionist colour theory and broken brushwork. It was painted on the reverse of an earlier peasant study, a practical reuse of canvas that also links his bright Paris experimentation with the darker work of his Dutch period.
