Self-Portrait Without Beard by Vincent van Gogh. This painting may be the last painting that van Gogh created before killing himself. Van Gogh created many self-portraits during his lifetime, he was a prolific self-portraitist, who painted himself thirty-seven times between 1886 and 1889. In all of these self-portraits one is struck that the gaze of the painter is seldom directed at us; even when it is a fixed gaze, he seems to look elsewhere. These paintings vary in intensity and colour and some portray the artist with beard, some beardless, some with bandages; representing the episode in which he severed one of his ears.
