Vincent Van Gogh - Wheat Field with Cypresses

Wheat Field with Cypresses (Champ de blé avec cyprès), painted in June 1889 in oil on canvas by Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh painted this first large version directly from nature during his early summer exploration of the countryside around Saint-Rémy. Golden wheat, dark cypresses, distant hills and a turbulent blue sky are bound together by thick, directional strokes. He compared the sky to patterned fabric and considered the sunlit landscape one of his best summer canvases, later returning to the composition in drawings and painted repetitions.
