Vintage - Be Kind to Animals - Abandoned Animals,

A vintage public service poster for the Humane Society features an illustration of a boy and his dog. They come upon a vacant house with a "For Rent" sign and find that the family who moved out abandoned their pet cat. The cat sits on the front porch, hungry and alone, wondering if and when the family will return. The kind and concerned boy brings a bowl of food or milk for the cat. These vintage posters, many illustrated by Dennis Morgan, were produced for the American Humane Association’s ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ in the 1930s. Each Dennis Morgan poster featured a child performing an act of kindness to animals. Several well-known artists of the time contributed artwork for these posters over the first few decades of ‘Be Kind to Animals Week’ which began in 1915 in the U.S. A similar campaign was also underway in England. The printed posters in the U.S. were sent to local humane societies with blank space left at the bottom where the local agency’s information could be added.
