Carthage, located just outside modern-day Tunis, was once one of the most powerful cities of the ancient world and a formidable rival to Rome. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 9th century BCE, it became a major maritime and trading empire controlling large parts of the Mediterranean. Its strategic location and wealth brought it into direct conflict with Rome during the Punic Wars, culminating in its destruction in 146 BCE.
