Vintage - Emperor Meets Three Sisters,
A vintage children's book illustration by Henry Justice Ford from the 1901 Andrew Lang book titled "The Violet Fairy." The illustration is captioned "The emperor meets the three sisters." It depicts a scene in the woods where three beautiful sisters are chatting and relaxing in a grassy clearing. A king or emperor riding a white horse approaches them and meets them for the first time. The English artist and illustrator, Henry Justice Ford (1860-1941) often signed his work H. J. Ford. He first became well known for his illustrations for 25 collections of Andrew Lang’s fairy books which sold worldwide in the 1880s and 1890s. Lang titled his books using colours such as “The Red Fairy” and “The Green Fairy.” Ford also exhibited landscapes and paintings of historical subjects at the Royal Academy of Art.
